Work Experience

Work Experience Placements

We recognise our role in providing unpaid work experience that can support meaningful learning and development opportunities for those undertaking secondary or tertiary studies in our region.

Gympie Regional Council aims to provide an environment that promotes opportunities which offer an insight into real life work and careers within Local Government.

Eligibility and Limitations

To be considered for placement applicants:

  • must be at least 15 years of age
  • registered with a recognised school tertiary institution or referral agency that covers them for worker’s compensation and public liability insurance

Work experience opportunities shall be limited to positions that:

  • Have low exposure to health and safety risks
  • Operate within ordinary working hours (Monday – Friday, 6 am – 6 pm)

Work experience/placement approval is subject to Council staff availability, time, workload constraints and it may not be possible to meet all requests.


Work experience placements are available twice a year through a formal application process:

Intake 1
Application period: January to March
Placement period: May to July

Intake 2
Application period: April to June
Placement period: August to October

A formal Work Experience Placement Agreement with appropriate evidence of insurance must be received by Council prior to the commencement of the placement.

Temporary Employment with Council

Council fills its requirements for temporary positions or project-based positions as the need arises across all areas of Council. Candidates must be registered with agencies to be considered for any temporary positions, and to facilitate, a link to relevant agency websites is provided below:
